After a stressful day, sometimes it’s hard to relax and wind down for bed. I find it helpful to repeat the same routine each night. This signals to my body that it’s time to slow down and prepares me for a good night’s sleep.
Try this evening ritual or use it to inspire you to create one of your own. You can choose any or all of the following:
- Take a warm bath with 1 cup of Epsom salt and a few drops of Lavender essential oil stirred into the water. Light a few candles and put on some soothing instrumental music. Allow yourself to completely relax in the tub for at least 20 uninterrupted minutes, if possible.
- Sip a warm herbal tea throughout the evening, such as chamomile, lemon balm, valerian or ginger. For more information on the soothing and healing benefits of tea, read my Tea Totally post.
- Do a short calming Yoga practice or just a little stretching in bed. Try my Bedtime Yoga routine.
- Offer yourself some loving attention. Brush your hair. Give your feet a massage with a calming oil such as Lavender. You could also massage your hands, shoulders or any other areas of your body that need attention. Tune in and listen to your body and respond to its needs.
- Try to turn off the TV and put aside any business at least an hour before bedtime. Instead, read an inspiring book or try falling asleep to an Affirmations or Bedtime Meditation.
- Get to sleep as early as you can. If you have trouble falling asleep, do some breathing exercises from my Breathing for Life section. Or listen to some sleep music or relaxing nature sounds, like rain. For more suggestions on insomnia, see my Home Health Remedies section.
Don’t allow yourself a minute of guilt for taking this time to care for yourself. Remember, being a loving person means loving yourself!
Sweet dreams!
With All My Heart,
